Join us every third Thursday of the month from May through October (2026) for Thaco Thursdays with a View: a social group ride co-hosted by SVBE and Western Wheelers. Think of it as your mid-month reset: scenic routes, quiet vista stops, good company and tacos at the end.
This ride is designed for intermediate riders with group riding experience. Routes cover 20–30 miles with an emphasis on scenery over speed.

Four volunteers share what keeps them coming back to BikeX — and why a wrench, a kind word and a little elbow grease can change a life.
Mark your calendars: the BikeX Spring Swap Meet is happening on Sunday, May 17, 2026, at our shop in Palo Alto. Whether you're looking to score your next ride, offload gear that's been collecting dust or just spend a Sunday morning in good company, we’ll see you there!
You found SVBE through Craigslist, of all places. Tell us about that.
A random online rabbit hole, honestly. I came across BikeX through Craigslist ads and bikex.org, drove in to see a Rans Stratus recumbent bike, which another customer bought, but I looked around and saw a variety of interesting bikes.
I missed out on the bike but met Gregg and got to look at all the neat retro bikes. I had worked at a couple of bike shops in the late '90s, so when the opportunity to join the team came up, I jumped at it. A chance to work with my hands doing something that helps people — that combination is hard to pass up.

SVBE would like to give our sincerest thanks to all the volunteers who helped out at our Big Spring Parking Lot Bike Sale on Saturday, March 21!
With the great weather we've been having, the last two weeks have already been pretty solid, sales-wise. So much so that we were concerned about having enough bikes ready for the Big Sale. At the start of the event, we had 65 bikes for sale and we added on a couple more thanks to the QA crew.
Bicycles have always been more than transportation. For many women, riding a bicycle meant independence, mobility, and the chance to challenge the limits society placed on them. In the late 1800s, when social norms often restricted women’s movement and autonomy, cycling opened new possibilities and began shifting public perceptions of women’s capabilities.

The Silicon Valley Bike Exchange recognizes transportation as an essential human need.
You may have food, shelter and job security, "but how are you supposed to get from all those places?" said Kelly Boyett, Program Manager for the nonprofit known as BikeX. Since 1993, BikeX has served this need by giving away more than 10,000 bicycles. Most of the donated bikes are repaired by volunteers and distributed to unhoused people, the very poor, or day-laborers through a variety of recipient organizations. Others are sold to support the repair shop.

If you follow my bike repair stories, you know that I am a sucker for bright shiny objects. Black is cool, but dayglow orange or any other bright color is more my thing.
I walked past this bike at the Bike Exchange for a couple of weeks. It was definitely my style, but a bit ragged-looking, and I was still working on the Electra Tattoo bike, so I let the Motiv sit.
We’re thrilled to announce that Silicon Valley Bicycle Exchange has been selected as a beneficiary of Sports Basement’s Basementeer program! This partnership means that every time you shop at Sports Basement, you can support SVBE just by being a customer.
Many thanks to all of our volunteers and staff who helped us surpass our goal of 800 bikes repaired and donated in 2024. You all made it possible to get bikes to 818 individuals of all ages and backgrounds rolling to jobs, school, errands, medical appointments, and recreation.
